About Dr. Sammy Cheng
Dr. Sammy Cheng is a Clinical Psychologist on the Accredited Register of the Hong Kong Department of Health, a Registered Clinical Psychologist with the Division of Clinical Psychology of the Hong Kong Psychological Society, and an Accredited Clinical Supervisor recognized by the Hong Kong Institute of Clinical Psychologists. He is also a member of the Clinical Psychology divisions of both the British Psychological Society and the American Psychological Association. Previously, he served as President of the Hong Kong Psychological Society and Chairperson of its Division of Clinical Psychology, where he led initiatives to promote mental health education and advance the quality of clinical psychological services in Hong Kong.
Dr. Cheng holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. With over 20 years of clinical experience, he has worked across multiple hospitals under the Hospital Authority, including Kwai Chung Hospital, Yan Chai Hospital, Caritas Medical Centre, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Lai King Rehabilitation Building. He specializes in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of psychological and psychiatric disorders across all age groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. [appointment]
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Cheng has served as an expert witness in court, both during his tenure with the Hospital Authority and in private practice. He is highly experienced in preparing forensic psychological assessment reports for cases involving work-related injuries, trauma, criminal charges, and other legal matters, and in serving as an expert witness in court.
Dr. Cheng has contributed significantly to academia as an Honorary Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong’s Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine and as an Honorary Clinical Supervisor for the psychology departments of both The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he supervised clinical psychology trainees. A strong advocate for evidence-based practice, he has actively collaborated on clinical research with medical professionals and published extensively in international psychology and medical journals. His research focuses on cognitive behavioral therapy, insomnia, depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, pain management, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He is also the author of several books, including Behaviors and Treatment, Self-help Insomnia, and the university textbook Foundations of Social Sciences: Psychology and Sociology.
Committed to public education, Dr. Cheng has conducted training workshops for government departments, corporations, universities, and professional organizations.
